Jesse Beetham

Jesse is an engineering geologist who works for Tonkin + Taylor in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. Jesse graduated with a MSc(Hons) from the University of Waikato in 2016 and has been working in the Bay of Plenty region since graduating. Jesse has a keen interest in geological and geomorphological mapping, large-scale landslide assessments, geological hazard assessments and applying fundamental engineering geology skills whenever possible.

Abstract

Tauranga Liquefaction Study – Geomorphological Mapping

Tauranga City Council engaged Tonkin + Taylor and Aurecon to undertake a liquefaction vulnerability assessment for the city. An important component of this vulnerability assessment was developing a city-wide geomorphological map to aid in this process. Information obtained from geological maps, digital elevation models, current and historical aerial imagery, research papers, geotechnical databases, local knowledge and field mapping was compiled on a GIS platform and used to inform the geomorphic mapping. There were regular meetings between the client and consultants to discuss progress and findings.
This project emphasized the value of existing digital resources in the context of everyday projects and jobs and the value of regular client communications. Before our clients spend thousands of dollars on geotechnical investigations, we can interrogate existing data and compile information using the methods described above. This can help us better understand the geotechnical/geological conditions of a particular area or site and where gaps lie. We can then inform our clients and target investigations to maximise the value of our work for them. The benefits of cross-consultancy collaboration and communication was also highlighted during this project.
